Russian Checkers 8×8

In Russian checkers 8×8, the rules are straightforward yet challenging:

  • White always starts the game.
  • Checkers move only on dark squares.
  • You must capture an opponent's checker if the opportunity arises.
  • Capturing is allowed both forward and backward.
  • Kings have the freedom to move and capture along any diagonal.
  • The Turkish strike rule is in effect, allowing only one capture per move.
  • If multiple capture options are available, you may choose any, not just the longest.
  • A checker that reaches the opponent's edge becomes a king and can immediately act as one if possible.

A draw can be declared under the following conditions:

  • If a player with checkers and three (or more) kings faces one opponent's king and cannot capture it within 15 moves from the established balance of forces.
  • In positions with kings on both sides, if the balance of forces remains unchanged for 30 moves in 4-5 piece endings, or 60 moves in 6-7 piece endings.
  • If a player with three checkers (in any combination) against an opponent's king on the "high road" cannot capture it within 5 moves.
  • If only kings are moved for 15 consecutive moves without simple checkers moving or capturing.
  • If the same position repeats three or more times, with the same player to move each time.

International Checkers 10×10

International checkers 10×10 follows a similar set of rules but with some key differences:

  • White initiates the game.
  • Checkers are restricted to dark squares.
  • Capturing an opponent's checker is mandatory if possible.
  • Both forward and backward captures are permitted.
  • Kings can move and capture along any diagonal.
  • The Turkish strike rule applies, limiting one capture per move.
  • The majority rule dictates choosing the capture that takes the most checkers.
  • If a simple checker captures and reaches the opponent's edge, it continues the move as an ordinary checker.
  • A simple checker that reaches the opponent's edge by a move or capture becomes a king but waits until the next turn to move as a king.
