This sums up to 28 points for the cards. Some versions of the game award an extra point for the last trick, totaling 29 points, which explains the game's name. However, many modern players do not include the last trick point, yet the game retains its name as 29, even with only 28 points in play.

Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives removed from the full deck serve as trump indicators, with each player receiving one set of these cards, one for each suit. Meanwhile, the Sixes are utilized for scoring, with each partnership using one red and one black Six to keep track of their score.
