Conway's Game of Life, created by mathematician John Conway in 1970, is a fascinating cellular automation simulation.
This zero-player game unfolds on an infinite two-dimensional grid where each cell exists in one of two states: alive or dead. Every generation (game turn) updates all cells simultaneously based on their eight immediate neighbors - those touching horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
The simulation begins with an initial pattern (generation 0). Subsequent generations emerge by applying these fundamental rules to every cell at the same instant:
- Living cells survive with exactly 2 or 3 living neighbors
- Dead cells become alive with precisely 3 living neighbors
After extensive experimentation with various rule sets, Conway selected these particular conditions because they create the most interesting emergent behavior. The chosen rules balance delicately between patterns that rapidly die out and those that expand endlessly, producing complex, life-like interactions at this critical threshold.
