A domino set, often called a deck or pack, typically consists of 28 tiles, known as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. The traditional Sino-European set includes tiles from double blank to double six. Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 cater to games such as Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Each country has its own favorite domino games, such as Muggins (All Fives) in England, Bergen in Scandinavian countries, Mexican Train in Mexico, and Matador in Spain.
Dominoes trace their origins back to Song Dynasty China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains somewhat mysterious.
General Rules of Dominoes
Blocking Game: The simplest domino variant is a two-player game using a double six set. Players draw seven tiles from the shuffled stock or boneyard, with the remainder unused. Tiles are placed on-edge for privacy, and the game begins with one player laying down a tile. The first tile varies by game; in Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6), in Bergen, it's 0-0, and in Mexican Train, each round starts with the next lower double. Players take turns extending the line of play by matching tile ends. The game concludes when a player uses all their tiles or the game is blocked, with points awarded based on the remaining tiles.
Scoring Game: Points are scored during gameplay for specific configurations or moves. In Muggins (All Fives), points are gained when the open ends of the layout sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, scoring occurs when the numbers on the open ends are equal. In Mexican Train, the double zero tile scores 50 points. Players must call "domino" before laying a tile, or face penalties if another player calls it afterward.
Draw Game: Players can draw tiles from the stock before playing. The game ends with the score calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand and the stock, with typically two tiles left in the stock. The draw game is often simply called "dominos."
