The Hang is a unique musical instrument belonging to the idiophone family, first developed in Switzerland.

This innovative instrument is crafted from two deep-drawn, nitrided steel half-shells that are bonded together at the rim, forming a hollow interior and giving it the distinctive "UFO-like" shape. The upper surface, known as the "Ding," features a central note area surrounded by seven or eight precisely hammered tone fields. These allow for melodic play and harmonic resonance. The lower side, referred to as the "Gu," includes a centered hole with a rolled edge that produces a resonant bass note when struck, adding depth and richness to its sound. The Hang is also commonly referred to as a handpan.

The Hang operates on some of the same acoustic principles as the steelpan, but with modifications that enable it to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its invention was the culmination of extensive research into the properties of steelpan instruments and other related musical forms.
