A Retrospective Look at Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Games on the Nintendo Switch

This article takes a slightly different approach to reviewing retro games on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike other consoles with numerous Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports, the Switch's selection is more limited. Therefore, this list combines the best of both handheld systems available on the Switch eShop, featuring four Game Boy Advance titles and six Nintendo DS titles. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts many great Game Boy Advance games, this focus is on titles found exclusively on the eShop. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA port is still a worthwhile experience. A fun comparison piece to the original, and offers a potentially more accessible gameplay experience. Regardless of your preferred version, Steel Empire remains a captivating game, even for those not typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X series faced challenges on home consoles, the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a true successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an exceptional side-scrolling action series. While the initial entry might have some rough edges in its presentation, these are polished in later installments. This is undoubtedly the best place to begin your Mega Man Zero adventure.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry makes the list, justified by the stark differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The core concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While the later games in the series see diminishing returns, the original offers a highly enjoyable experience.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection contains several worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out as the best. For me, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grinding enjoyable. The unique setting and hidden secrets further solidify its position as a top-tier Game Boy Advance title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, allowed the Half-Genie Hero to achieve wider recognition. This title launched Shantae's continued success across various consoles. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased Game Boy Advance game, which will soon see its own release.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a Game Boy Advance title (its origin), Ace Attorney is a standout adventure game. It blends investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes, goofy humor, and compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, although later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the truth about your death. A captivating and underrated title from its original DS release.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a suitable alternative for those without access to a DS. A fantastic game in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are great, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the improved button controls over the original touch controls. Play them all!

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

The Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but this Switch port offers a playable experience. Each game is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III stands out as the largest and most rewarding.

This concludes the list. What are your favorite Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS games on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
