This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, amassing a phenomenal library, with re-releases still prevalent. While these titles challenged Nintendo a generation ago, everyone now enjoys them across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order).

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving but underappreciated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a floppy-eared cat-like creature traversing a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel falls slightly short, the collection is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII catapulted Japanese RPGs into the Western mainstream, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a cornerstone of the PlayStation's success. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygon limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation giant, Metal Gear Solid revived a dormant franchise. Though later entries delved into more eccentric territory, the original remains a compelling, action-packed adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of GI Joe. Its enjoyable gameplay is a significant draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, they possess a unique charm. The vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid overwhelming the list with Square Enix titles, I've included only this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, while failing to match Chrono Trigger's acclaim, stands on its own merits. It's a cleverly designed, visually stunning RPG boasting a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters and one of the best video game soundtracks ever.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, objectivity dictates recommending only a select few to newcomers. For the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 feels particularly well-crafted. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to experience these titles firsthand.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with engaging action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins mastermind, it starts deceptively easy before presenting significant challenges. Its availability is a welcome addition.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, from the Lunar team, offers a bright, cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the era. Its satisfying combat system enhances Game Arts' work on the Lunar series.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. The original, focusing on tomb raiding over action, is arguably the strongest entry in the Core Design era. This collection includes the first three games, allowing players to form their own opinions.

moon ($18.99)

Originally a Japan-only release, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, functioning more as an adventure game with a unique, arguably "punk," aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and message are compelling.
