At first glance, Atomfall might resemble a Fallout game—perhaps even a Fallout game set in post-apocalyptic England. It's a first-person, post-nuclear title (the name's a pretty big hint!), featuring an alt-history setting reminiscent of Fallout's iconic world. This comparison is understandable, and Rebellion's art director, Ryan Greene, acknowledges it. The team anticipated the Fallout comparisons from the outset.

“We knew it would be compared to Fallout,” Greene told IGN. “One of our owners, Jason Kingsley, is a huge Fallout fan, so parallels were inevitable. Any survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world will naturally draw comparisons to Fallout. They're masters of their craft, and that's fantastic.”

“Once you play it, you'll see it's its own thing,” Greene stated. He points out Rebellion's independent status, separate from Bethesda and Microsoft. While ambitious for Rebellion, Atomfall isn't on the scale of an Elder Scrolls or Fallout title.

“We're version 1.0,” Greene continued. “Being compared to those teams is flattering; they’re incredibly skilled.”

Greene estimates an average playthrough at around 25 hours, though completionists could significantly extend that. IGN's recent hands-on preview showcases the game's unique gameplay—Simon Cardy managed a full playthrough by killing everyone.

This is a deliberate design choice. “You can kill anyone or everyone,” Greene confirmed. “The game has multiple endings; some will be inaccessible if you kill key characters, but there are always alternative paths to completion.”

Atomfall deviates from traditional RPG quest structures. Instead of main and side quests, it features “a spiderweb of interconnected stories,” according to Greene. Severing one narrative thread doesn't necessarily halt progress; other paths lead to the overarching mystery.

A pacifist playthrough is also possible. Greene confirms this, stating, “I've played for about nine hours, nearly halfway through, without killing anyone. I'm confident it's entirely feasible.”
