Atomfall Profitable at Launch, Sequel in Discussion

Atomfall, the British survival game developed by Rebellion, has proven to be a smashing success right from its launch on March 27, 2025, across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Despite a significant portion of its 2 million player base coming from Xbox Game Pass subscribers who did not purchase the game outright, Atomfall became "immediately profitable," recouping its development costs swiftly.

Rebellion has opted not to disclose specific sales figures but highlighted that Atomfall marked the studio's biggest launch in terms of player engagement. This success was partly fueled by the Game Pass community, showcasing how subscription services can significantly boost game visibility and player counts.

The game's positive reception has led Rebellion to explore future possibilities, including potential sequels or spin-offs, while continuing to support Atomfall with post-launch content and DLC. In discussions with The Game Business, the developer shared insights into their strategic approach, emphasizing the game's financial viability from the get-go.

Jason Kingsley, the head of Rebellion, spoke to GamesIndustry.biz about the strategic advantage of launching on Game Pass. He noted that the service mitigates the risk of cannibalizing sales by providing a guaranteed income stream, regardless of direct sales performance. Kingsley highlighted the marketing and audience reach benefits of Game Pass, which encourages word-of-mouth promotion and can drive additional sales outside the subscription platform.

While the exact financial details of Rebellion's deal with Microsoft remain under wraps, it's clear that both parties have benefited from Atomfall's inclusion in Game Pass. The service, with its last reported 34 million subscribers in February 2024, provides a vast audience and a platform for games to thrive.

IGN's review of Atomfall praised it as a "gripping survival-action adventure that takes some of the best elements of Fallout and Elden Ring, and synthesizes them into its own fresh mutation," underscoring the game's unique appeal and successful execution.
