Baldur's Gate 3: Orpheus's Fate: Should You Release or Resist?
In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal choice: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle him. This decision, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the game's outcome and character relationships.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before this decision, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. The choice carries immense weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (30+) are crucial for influencing companion decisions before and after the Netherbrain battle.
Spoiler Warning: The following discusses Baldur's Gate 3's ending.
Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?
This choice hinges on player priorities. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
After the Netherbrain encounter (which the party might fail), the Emperor presents the dilemma: free Orpheus or let him be assimilated for the Emperor's advantage.
Siding with the Emperor: This leads to Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this aids in defeating the Netherbrain, it's unpopular with some players.
Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer, contradicting the initial goal. However, Orpheus joins the fight, and if asked, he'll willingly sacrifice himself to save his people.
In short: Choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus if you accept the risk of Illithid transformation for a potentially more satisfying outcome. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
Moral Considerations:
The "good" choice depends on individual perspectives, but boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, as a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives might feel overly demanding to others. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if influencing the wider world.
The Emperor, a generally benevolent figure, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices, however. Following his plan might lead to Illithid transformation, but with a morally sound justification. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, allowing for diverse outcomes.
