Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate 4 sequel.

A Playable BG4 Prototype Exists, But Larian Moved On

Larian CEO Swen Vincke shared in a PC Gamer interview that a playable version of BG4 existed. While acknowledging it was a project fans would have enjoyed, the team decided against further development. The reasons cited were fatigue after years of working within the Dungeons & Dragons universe and a desire to pursue original ideas. The prospect of potentially spending another three years iterating on the project proved unappealing.

The decision, according to Vincke, significantly boosted team morale. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. A planned Baldur's Gate 3 DLC was also abandoned for similar reasons.

High Morale and Future Projects

The team's enthusiasm for new projects is high. Following the success at The Game Awards 2023, the shift away from Baldur's Gate allowed for a renewed sense of creative freedom. After a well-deserved break, Larian will concentrate on their undisclosed projects.

Return to the Divinity Series?

While details are scarce, Larian's future projects may involve a return to their Divinity series. Although a Divinity: Original Sin 3 sequel has been hinted at, Vincke clarified that their next Divinity installment will be unexpected.

Baldur's Gate 3's Future

Baldur's Gate 3 will receive one final major patch in Fall 2024, introducing mod support, cross-play, and new evil endings.
