Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting

Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 has seen an explosive surge in mod usage following the release of Patch 7. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the modding community quickly embracing the new tools and possibilities.

Larian CEO Swen Vincke confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. This figure was later surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over three million installs and counting. This incredible uptake highlights the significant impact of the integrated mod manager included in Patch 7.

The new mod manager simplifies the process of browsing, installing, and managing community-created content directly within the game. Previously, modders relied on external tools. Larian's in-house scripting language, Osiris, empowers mod creators to craft their own narratives and experiences. The toolkit allows for custom script loading and basic debugging, with direct publishing capabilities.

Enhanced Modding Capabilities

A community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" by modder Siegfre on Nexus has further expanded modding potential. This toolkit reportedly includes a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted features in Larian's editor, offering even greater creative freedom to modders. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, the community's ingenuity has pushed the boundaries.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon

Larian Studios has confirmed its commitment to cross-platform modding, a significant undertaking given the complexities of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke stated that the studio is actively working on this feature, prioritizing the PC version initially before tackling the console versions due to certification processes.
