The game begins in the Library Of Babel, a vast and enigmatic structure inspired by the biblical Tower of Babel and Jorge Luis Borges' short story. In Borges' tale, the library contains every conceivable book, and thus, every written work is hidden within its endless shelves.

You awaken in this mysterious place, with no recollection of how you arrived, alongside a colorful cast of characters who share your confusion. It seems you're destined for greatness.

However, there's a catch: a giant spinning orb will annihilate everyone in twenty-four hours. Welcome to your first day as a Seer! Hope you enjoy bookshelves.

Despite the humor, the setting and story are intriguingly bizarre. A library filled with nonsensical books, time travel, and numerous mythology references (we won't spoil them, but keep an eye on that bird) plunge you into a deep narrative. If you're feeling lost, that's exactly the point.

Black Beacon's core experience is an ARPG dungeon crawler with a customizable camera view. You can opt for a top-down perspective or a free camera setup, adjusting the view with your other hand. We preferred the latter, but it's a matter of personal taste.

You navigate the Library's corridors, progressing through short, episodic story segments, each containing several maps. Accessing these sections requires energy, which the game generously provides.

Your journey involves exploring areas, solving puzzles, hunting for hidden treasure chests, and battling enemies—distorted remnants of individuals the Library hasn't fully "digested." Yikes.

Combat is enjoyable, fast-paced, and challenging without feeling monotonous. Timing is crucial: a perfectly timed dodge grants iframes, while a well-placed heavy attack can interrupt an enemy's move, sparing you from dodging.

The character-swapping mechanic adds a strategic layer to battles, allowing you to bench exhausted fighters mid-attack and bring in fresh ones. Mastering this rhythm feels rewarding, though mistiming a dodge can send you flying down the hallway.

Characters And Weapon Rolls

As a gacha game, Black Beacon involves rolling for characters and weapons, which are specific to each character. Both can be leveled up, and while the system involves many ingredients, much of the process can be automated.

You might encounter characters through the gacha before meeting them in the story, adding an element of variety. The flow of time is convoluted, after all.
