Block Blast! has just cracked 40 million monthly players
                A mix of Tetris, match three and more, it's come out of nowhere in 2024 to grab plenty of players

While 2024 may have been a bit of a dire year for some developers, with a number of games facing the axe, some others have had a real surge in popularity. Case in point, today's subject Block Blast! Despite releasing in 2023 it's now just cracked 40 million monthly players this year, and developer Hungry Studio is rightfully celebrating.

If you need to know what Block Blast is actually about, well, it's Tetris. Sort of. Unlike the classic falling block puzzler, in Block Blast the coloured segments are static, letting you pick and choose where to place and clear each line. That's on top of the addition of a few match-three mechanics to boot.

Not only that, but you get two different modes with your classic one that lets you play level after level, while adventure mode allows you to explore different stories. That's on top of the ability to play offline and other bonuses that Hungry Studio boast about. If you want to give it a go you can find Block Blast on an iOS or Android storefront near you.

It's really not hard to see precisely why Block Blast has become so popular. If I had to guess I'd wager that adventure mode is a major contributor to that success. A bit of a peek behind the curtain, but you'd be surprised how many developers attribute adding stories or other narrative elements to their success.

One only needs to consider games like June's Journey to see how Wooga's hit hidden object puzzler has steadily become a big success for the developer, aided significantly by the soap opera-esque storylines.
