"Borderlands 4 CEO: $80 Price No Issue for True Fans"

As the excitement builds for the upcoming release of Borderlands 4, fans are keenly awaiting more details from developer Gearbox Software. A particularly contentious issue has been the game's potential price, speculated to be over $80. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford stirred controversy with his remarks on the subject, suggesting that true fans will find a way to purchase the game regardless of its cost.
Gearbox CEO's Stance on Pricing
In a Twitter (X) post dated May 14, Pitchford responded to a fan's concern about the high price point, stating that the final pricing decision is beyond his control and that "real fans" would find a way to acquire the game. This statement sparked a significant backlash among the community, with many fans expressing their frustration in the comments. They argued that the already steep $80 price could escalate further with additional costs for season passes and skins.

During a PAX East panel on May 10, Pitchford elaborated on the pricing issue, noting the increased development budgets and retail tariffs impacting game costs. He revealed that Borderlands 4 has a development budget more than double that of Borderlands 3, yet he remained non-committal on the final price, leaving fans uncertain and dissatisfied with his implication that unwillingness to pay high prices equates to a lack of true fandom.
Take-Two Interactive's Perspective

In contrast, Take-Two Interactive, the game's publisher, adopted a more measured approach to the pricing debate. In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized the company's commitment to delivering exceptional value. He highlighted that the entertainment value of their games far exceeds the price charged, asserting that it's their responsibility to offer the best possible experience.
Zelnick further explained to GamesIndustry.biz on May 16 that Take-Two employs a variable pricing strategy tailored to each game, aiming to provide more value than the cost. This approach was reflected in the pricing of their upcoming title, Mafia: The Old Country, set at $50, while rumors suggest GTA VI might exceed $100.

The recent developments around the Borderlands series, including the backlash over EULA changes and now the pricing concerns for Borderlands 4, underscore the importance of Gearbox listening to their fanbase. As the game is slated for release on September 12, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, staying attuned to fan feedback will be crucial for Gearbox's success.
