Buffy Reboot with Gellar Returns
Hulu may be bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer back from the dead. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding star power to the project, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the new series will center around a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's reprisal as a key supporting character.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. She was aided by friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The franchise continued with the Angel spin-off and subsequent comic book series.
