Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors

Despite reports suggesting his return, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his comeback alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.

This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie later confirmed that Evans himself denied this, stating he's "happily retired." Evans echoed this sentiment to Esquire, reiterating his retirement from the MCU and expressing his weariness with recurring rumors of his return, which have surfaced periodically since Avengers: Endgame.

While Evans has returned to the superhero genre, albeit briefly, playing Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role significantly different from his leading role as Captain America.

The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, after facing assault and harassment charges. Majors' departure, which left a significant hole in the planned storyline, has led to speculation about the return of original Avengers.

The role of the new main antagonist, Doctor Doom, has been cast with Robert Downey Jr., fueling these theories. However, aside from Downey Jr.'s casting, no further official confirmations regarding returning original Avengers have been made.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, confirmed his absence from Avengers: Doomsday but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
