As Captain America: Brave New World inches closer to the $300 million mark at the global box office, concerns arise regarding its financial viability. The film experienced a significant 68% decline in domestic revenue during its second weekend, which could hinder its ability to recoup its $180 million production budget and reach the critical $425 million break-even point.

According to Deadline, the highly anticipated Anthony Mackie-led action flick exceeded expectations with a $100 million opening in the U.S. over the Presidents Day holiday. However, the domestic earnings dropped sharply to $28.2 million in its second weekend, echoing the steep decline seen in last year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to cover its costs.

Despite its impressive start, industry analysts suggest that Captain America: Brave New World may struggle to maintain momentum. Senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted, "This is the new normal for Marvel movies. While audiences still show interest, a 68% dip in the second weekend indicates lower-than-expected enthusiasm."

Currently, the film has grossed approximately $289.4 million globally ($141.2 million domestically and $148.2 million internationally). Over its second weekend, it earned $63.5 million worldwide. Despite being the year’s biggest theatrical release so far, experts predict the movie will conclude its run with around $450 million in global ticket sales.

Critics were underwhelmed, with IGN awarding the film a lukewarm 5/10 rating. The review highlighted that the movie lacked innovation and depth, particularly in its lead performances.

Marvel Studios and Disney are counting on Captain America: Brave New World to buck the recent trend of lukewarm box office results for MCU films, aside from last year’s smash hit Deadpool & Wolverine. Success with this title could pave the way for upcoming releases such as Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
