Civilization VII: Gandhi's Nuclear Absence and Historical Accuracy

The "Nuclear Gandhi" myth: Fact or Fiction in the World of Civilization?
The infamous "Nuclear Gandhi" bug from the original Civilization game is a legendary tale among gamers. But was this legendary nuclear-wielding Gandhi a reality, or simply a product of the gaming community's imagination? Let's delve into the history and truth behind this enduring myth.

The Legend of Nuclear Gandhi
Gaming communities often develop their own unique mythologies, with stories and rumors passed down like folklore. In the early days of gaming, "Nuclear Gandhi" was a prominent example. The story claimed that a bug in the original Civilization transformed the peaceful Gandhi into a nuclear-armed warmonger. But was there any truth to this captivating – and terrifying – tale?
The Myth's Mechanics
The legend suggests that leaders in the original Civilization had an aggression parameter (1-10 or 1-12), with 1 being pacifist and 10 being aggressive. Gandhi, being a pacifist, started at 1. Upon adopting Democracy, his aggression supposedly dropped by 2, resulting in -1. The crucial part of the myth is that this parameter was allegedly an 8-bit unsigned integer (0-255). The negative value, it was claimed, caused an integer overflow, flipping the value to 255, making Gandhi incredibly aggressive. Combined with the availability of nuclear weapons after adopting Democracy, this led to Gandhi unleashing nuclear devastation.
The Spread of the Legend
The Nuclear Gandhi legend spread rapidly within the Civilization community and beyond. Interestingly, its popularity didn't peak until the mid-2010s, long after the original game's release. Verifying the myth was difficult due to the game's age and dwindling player base.
Debunking the Myth
Sid Meier himself, the creator of Civilization, declared the Nuclear Gandhi myth "impossible" in 2020. He pointed out two key flaws: integer variables were signed, preventing the overflow, and government types didn't affect aggression levels. Brian Reynolds, lead designer of Civilization II, corroborated this, stating the original game only had three aggression levels.
A Twist in the Tale
While the original Civilization didn't feature Nuclear Gandhi, Civilization V did. Gandhi's AI was specifically coded to have a high preference for nuclear weapons, a fact confirmed by the game's lead designer. This suggests the legend might have originated from a misunderstanding or conflation with Civilization V's design choices.
The Legacy of Nuclear Gandhi
Despite being debunked, the Nuclear Gandhi myth persists. Its ironic nature and the unexpected consequences of a simple coding choice (in Civilization V) cemented its place in gaming history. Civilization VI even referenced the myth. With Gandhi absent from Civilization VII, the legend might finally rest.
