Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an upcoming RPG that draws inspiration from various genres, blending the charm of JRPGs with the intensity of souls-like games and the elegance of the Belle Époque era. Set to release on April 24, 2025, the game aims to captivate players with its innovative turn-based mechanics and immersive real-time interactions.

A Homage to JRPGs with a Unique Twist

At its heart, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 pays tribute to the classic JRPGs of yesteryears, particularly drawing inspiration from iconic titles such as Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, and 10. According to François Meurisse, the game’s producer, the team sought to capture the nostalgic essence of these beloved classics while infusing their own creative vision.

Meurisse explained, "Final Fantasy 10 and the earlier PlayStation entries were significant influences for us. They represent a golden age of JRPGs that our game director, Guillaume Broche, grew up with. He wanted to preserve that feeling in modern RPGs, but he also combined it with diverse inspirations to create something truly unique."

While the gameplay retains the turn-based structure familiar to JRPG fans, the developers aimed to differentiate their project through distinct art direction. "We didn’t want to imitate Japanese aesthetics," Meurisse continued. "Instead, we drew inspiration from Belle Époque art deco styles mixed with high fantasy elements. This fusion allowed us to carve out our own identity."

Souls-Like Mechanics Meet Turn-Based Combat

In addition to JRPG roots, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 incorporates mechanics from souls-like games, particularly Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The defense system features rhythmic timing and skill-based elements, offering players a fresh challenge.

To further enrich gameplay, the developers integrated concepts from deckbuilding games. Meurisse noted, "Rather than relying on traditional mana systems, we introduced action points for skills, allowing players to strategize their moves more dynamically."

Introducing Characters and Gameplay

As the game approaches its launch, Expedition 33 will unveil characters weekly, starting with Gustave, the resourceful engineer from Lumière. Known for his dedication and ingenuity, Gustave plays a pivotal role in the narrative, determined to stop the Paintress from causing further harm.

The trailer showcases Gustave wielding a sword and pistol, showcasing his ability to deal significant damage. His agility is evident as he navigates challenging terrains and engages enemies with precision. While specific details about character roles remain under wraps, the developers promise a rich tapestry of abilities and mechanics.
