Concord, Sony's Major Flop, Continues to Get Updates on Steam
Despite its swift demise weeks after launch, Sony's hero shooter, Concord, continues to receive updates on Steam, sparking considerable speculation among gamers. This article explores the ongoing updates and the potential scenarios they suggest.
Concord's SteamDB Update Activity Fuels Speculation
Free-to-Play Resurgence or Gameplay Overhaul? Theories Abound
Remember Concord? The hero shooter that flopped spectacularly? While officially unavailable since September 6th, its Steam page reveals a steady stream of updates.
Since September 29th, SteamDB shows over 20 updates, originating from accounts like "pmtest," "sonyqae," and "sonyqae_shipping." These account names strongly suggest that the updates focus on backend improvements and quality assurance ("QAE" likely stands for "Quality Assurance Engineer").
Concord's August launch, priced at $40, aimed to disrupt the hero shooter market dominated by free-to-play giants like Overwatch, Valorant, and Apex Legends. The launch, however, was disastrous. Within two weeks, Sony pulled the plug and offered refunds, citing minimal player base and overwhelmingly negative feedback. The game was widely deemed a failure.
So why the continued updates? Ryan Ellis, former Firewalk Studios Game Director, hinted at exploring options to better reach players in the game's shutdown announcement. This, coupled with the ongoing updates, fuels speculation of a potential comeback, possibly as a free-to-play title. This could address the significant criticism leveled at the game's paid model.
Given Sony's reported $400 million investment, attempts to salvage the project aren't surprising. Many believe Firewalk Studios is using this time for a complete overhaul, adding new features and addressing complaints about weak character design and uninspired gameplay.
However, Sony remains silent on its plans for Concord. Will it return with improved mechanics, a broader appeal, or a revised monetization strategy? Only Firewalk Studios and Sony know for sure. Even a free-to-play relaunch would face a challenging uphill battle in a saturated market.
Currently, Concord remains unavailable, and Sony has yet to make any official statements. The future of Concord remains uncertain, leaving gamers to speculate whether it will ever rise from the ashes of its initial failure.
