Walt Disney Returns as Audio-Animatronic for Disneyland’s 70th Celebration
Disney welcomed a select group into the exclusive corridors of Walt Disney Imagineering to reveal how they’re resurrecting their founder through cutting-edge Audio-Animatronics for Walt Disney - A Magical Life, set to mark Disneyland’s 70th anniversary. The project radiates reverence, precision, and a deep infusion of Disney’s signature charm.
Walt Disney - A Magical Life will premiere at Disneyland’s Main Street Opera House on July 17, 2025, exactly 70 years after the park’s grand opening. This experience invites global guests into Walt’s office to explore his transformative journey and lasting impact on entertainment.
Though the Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney wasn’t revealed, the insights and previews shared instilled confidence that this heartfelt endeavor will shine brilliantly.

One Man’s Vision
At Walt Disney Imagineering, we were introduced to what visitors can anticipate from Walt Disney - A Magical Life and why now is the ideal moment to bring Walt back to the only Disney park he personally visited.
“Crafting Walt Disney as an Audio-Animatronic is a profound responsibility,” said Tom Fitzgerald, senior creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering. “We’re applying the same meticulous care Walt and his team devoted to the Lincoln figure decades ago. Collaborating closely with The Walt Disney Family Museum and our archives, we’ve studied countless hours of footage and interviews to create the most authentic portrayal possible. Walt’s story of perseverance—turning setbacks into triumphs—remains as inspiring today as ever.”
The team emphasized their commitment to getting this right, taking their time. This initiative, in development for over seven years, has been a long-standing vision at Disney, but only now feels perfectly timed.
“We’ve worked tirelessly for years alongside The Walt Disney Family Museum, the Disney and Miller families, and their board,” said Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz, executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering. “This ensures a faithful, theatrical presentation that keeps Walt’s legacy alive in the medium he pioneered, told through our park’s storytelling tradition.”
“We’re meticulously recreating Walt’s expressive gestures—his hand movements, animated eyebrows, and that iconic spark in his eyes noted by those who knew him,” Shaver-Moskowitz continued. “Every word Walt speaks comes directly from his original interviews, carefully woven together to preserve his authentic voice.”
While the Audio-Animatronic itself remained under wraps, a unforgettable moment came when a life-size reference model of Walt was unveiled. It felt as if Walt himself stood among us.
The model, leaning casually against a desk as Walt often did, was a testament to precision. His hands were molded from a 1960s bronze casting of his actual hands by Adrian E. Flatt. His suit, crafted from the same fabric he wore, featured his beloved Smoke Tree Ranch tie. Each hair was meticulously placed, styled with Walt’s preferred grooming products for authentic sheen.

Every detail was considered—skin blemishes, fine hand hairs, subtle wrinkles, and slightly imperfect manicured nails, reflecting a man in his daily routine. That famed glimmer in his eyes, achieved through Imagineering artistry, made the model strikingly lifelike.
The final Audio-Animatronic’s reveal is still to come, but this model felt like a masterpiece, crafted by a team at the peak of their skill. It left us in awe.
“With today’s technology, guests can zoom in for extreme close-ups,” Fitzgerald noted. “Our figures must look flawless from afar and up close. This required groundbreaking innovation to bring Walt to life as vividly as he brought Abraham Lincoln, but for a modern audience.”

Why now? The convergence of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, advanced technology, and the right creative team made this the moment to honor Walt’s legacy properly.
A Legacy Honored
Diane Marie Disney-Miller, Walt’s daughter, co-founded The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco in 2009, housing over 30,000 Disney-related artifacts. She passed away in 2013, but her legacy lives on.
The museum played a pivotal role in this project. I spoke with its director, Kirsten Komoroske, about Walt Disney - A Magical Life, their contributions, and the family’s perspective.
“Disney approached us early to ensure Walt’s grandchildren were involved and comfortable,” Komoroske said. “They felt Walt’s fascination with technology aligned with the Imagineers’ advancements, allowing them to capture him authentically in his professional prime. The care and respect in this process are profound.”
The museum contributed over 30 items, including never-before-displayed pieces from Walt’s private Main Street apartment, like a green velvet rocking chair, glass lamps, and a floral tilt-top table. Guests will also see awards like his 1955 Emmy for Walt Disney’s Disneyland TV show, his 1964 Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a unique Racing Pigeon Association plaque from 1958.
These artifacts will feature in the Evolution of a Dream exhibit, opening alongside Walt Disney - A Magical Life, offering a deeper look into Walt’s life and work.
Komoroske believes this project continues Walt and Diane’s mission. “Diane wanted to share her father’s story—from humble beginnings and significant failures, like losing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to relentless innovation,” she said. “He could’ve stopped after Mickey Mouse’s success, but he pursued animated films, live-action, and theme parks. This exhibit at Disneyland amplifies that inspiring journey, and the family is deeply grateful.”
A Journey to 1963
The Walt Disney of this show, inspired by his 1963 Fletcher Markle interview, captures him at his creative peak—overseeing the New York World’s Fair, Mary Poppins, the secret Florida project, and a thriving Disneyland.
“Walt’s office, a blend of his Burbank workspace and TV set, will immerse guests in his story,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s packed with Easter eggs—a Lincoln photo, Disneyland plans, and more—creating the feeling of dropping in for a personal moment with him.”

The specifics of Walt’s dialogue remain a surprise, but the intent is clear. “He’ll start with his legacy and end with a profound reflection,” Shaver-Moskowitz said. “Despite his monumental achievements, Walt’s greatest gift was connecting through life’s simple virtues. His humility as an industry titan is what we’re excited to highlight.”
Disney historian Jeff Kurtti, with over 40 Disney-related books and a Chapman University fellowship, underscored the project’s reverence. “Since Walt’s passing, there’s been no consistent way to share his reality with new generations,” he said. “This attraction reintroduces Walt as a person, not a brand, bringing his philosophy into modern conversation.”
Kurtti emphasized the project’s sincerity. “There’s no commercial motive here,” he said. “It’s a genuine investment in celebrating Walt’s identity and ideals for those who cherish him and for future generations.”
This authenticity fuels hope that Walt Disney - A Magical Life will achieve its ambitious vision, honoring Walt in a way that resonates across generations.
“Disneyland will never be completed,” Walt famously said. “It will continue to grow as long as there’s imagination left in the world.”
Walt Disney - A Magical Life may be a complete show, but it’s not the full story of Walt or his guests. Its aim is to inspire millions to chase their dreams, proving they can come true—just as Walt did.
