EA defies trend, keeps game prices steady
Publisher/developer EA has confirmed it won't raise game prices despite competitors like Microsoft and Nintendo moving to $80 price points.
During its latest earnings call, CEO Andrew Wilson told investors the company remains focused on delivering "exceptional quality and outstanding value," highlighting the success of co-op adventure Split Fiction which has surpassed 4 million copies sold.
"Our business model has fundamentally evolved," Wilson explained. "While physical disc sales remain part of our operations, they now represent a much smaller portion compared to our diversified offerings - from free-to-play experiences to premium collector's editions."
"Whether we're pricing a product at $1, $10 or $100, our commitment remains unchanged: delivering exceptional experiences that justify their cost," continued Wilson. "We've consistently found that when we achieve this balance between quality and value, our business demonstrates remarkable resilience and growth."
CFO Stuart Canfield reinforced this position: "We currently have no plans to adjust our pricing strategy."
This announcement contrasts with recent moves across the industry, including Microsoft's confirmation of upcoming $80 premium games alongside recent hardware price increases. While Xbox first-party titles currently maintain their pricing, analysts expect $80 standard editions to debut this holiday season.
The gaming industry has seen steady price inflation in recent years, with the standard AAA price point rising from $60 to $70 base price. Nintendo in particular stands out with plans for $80 premium Switch 2 titles including exclusives like Mario Kart World, while pricing the new console itself at $450 - a decision generating fan criticism despite broader economic justifications.
EA's commitment suggests upcoming entries in the EA Sports FC, Madden, and Battlefield franchises will maintain their current $70 standard pricing structure.
This pricing strategy comes alongside recent restructuring at EA, including 100 position cuts at Respawn Entertainment (developers of Apex Legends) and approximately 300 company-wide layoffs reported last week by IGN.
