Magic: The Gathering has seen numerous Secret Lair crossovers this year, spanning from SpongeBob to Deadpool. Next month, another collaboration is racing onto the scene. Sonic the Hedgehog is receiving three separate Secret Lair drops, and we have an exclusive first look at one entirely dedicated to artifacts.

Unlike the recent Final Fantasy crossover, which encompassed a full draftable Magic set and four pre-built Commander decks, this Sonic collaboration follows the established pattern of similar tie-ins by being confined to three Secret Lair drops. Secret Lair is Magic's term for its timed releases containing a small selection of specific cards with unique artwork, all sold directly by Wizards of the Coast rather than in randomized packs.

In this release, the Turbo Gear drop features six existing Magic cards reimagined with new Sonic-themed art and names, plus one token card. It includes some staples perfectly suited for Magic's most popular format, Commander, such as Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves – after all, Sonic's shoes certainly deserve their own cards. Also noteworthy is the legendary vehicle Weatherlight, appearing here as Tornado, Sonic's biplane. Thanks to a recent rules change, you can even choose to have this vehicle as your Commander if you wish.

Wizards of the Coast states this drop is designed to complement the cards in another release focused on Sonic's characters themselves. While we cannot reveal those details yet, an example provided in Turbo Gear's store description is equipping The Reaver Cleaver, reimagined as Knuckles's Gloves, onto Knuckles himself. This concept aligns with other crossover drops, like 2023's Tomb Raider, where reprinted cards are intended to synergize well with the new Legendary creatures, offering a sort of starter kit for building your own Commander deck.

The Turbo Gear Secret Lair drop, along with the other two releases, will be available for purchase on July 14 at 9 AM PT on the official Secret Lair website. The non-foil version is priced at $29.99, while the foil version costs $39.99. Timeliness is crucial, as these drops are limited in quantity. Judging by recent crossovers, they are expected to sell out quickly.
