Final Fantasy Commander Decks Full of Fun, Surprising References

Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling the exciting details of their upcoming Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy crossover, set to launch this summer. Over the weekend, the team showcased a substantial portion of the cards, including those from the main set and the specialized Commander decks. Fans are thrilled to see the beloved elements from their favorite Final Fantasy games come to life in this innovative collaboration.

The Universes Beyond project with Final Fantasy is not only bringing the usual Commander decks but also a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast array of cards to explore. The main set spans the entire mainline of Final Fantasy, covering games from Final Fantasy 1 through Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks are dedicated to four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, each led by iconic characters Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola, respectively.

For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil features a transformation mechanic from Dark Knight to Paladin. The summons from Final Fantasy are portrayed as "Saga Creatures," offering powerful but temporary forces on the battlefield, seamlessly blending Magic and Final Fantasy elements.

Notable cards include Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, illustrated by Square's Tetsuya Nomura, which captures Sephiroth's evolution from a young fighter to his ultimate form as Safer Sephiroth on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

Reprints of existing Magic cards have been cleverly adapted to fit Final Fantasy lore. Skullclamp, for example, features art inspired by the Jenova project from Final Fantasy 7.

The cards in these decks also reference key character moments, so be prepared for some story spoilers if you dive into the decklists.

To balance the emotional weight, Wizards included lighter moments from Final Fantasy 10, such as the iconic and frequently memed scene depicted in Inspiring Call.

Clever Concealment references the Wall Market scene with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses, heading to Don Corneo's, complete with a fitting mechanic. Secret Rendezvous offers four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene from Final Fantasy 7, featuring each potential date: Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

.reddit-embed-wrapper iframe { margin-left: 0 !important; }Fans have been delighted to uncover the meticulous details that pay homage to the source material. The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, is rich with references to the acclaimed MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card captures the gentleman's quirky habit of disappearing and returning, creating an intriguing White/Black card. One user on the FFXIV subreddit pointed out that the Archaeomancer's Map card uses a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.

Final Fantasy 14 players have been enjoying the cards, with humorous takes like wondering who the Thancred card represents, referencing the "This is Thancred" meme. Another user added alternative flavor text to the Rite of Replication card, celebrating a memorable speech from A Realm Reborn.

Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

While the Commander decks have received significant attention, other reveals like Commune With Beavers have me eager to see how the rest of the Final Fantasy games are adapted into the broader Magic set.

The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set is scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, with pre-release events starting a week earlier.
