Frank Miller's Return to Daredevil: Born Again

The mid-1980s marked a golden era for Marvel Comics, both creatively and financially. Having overcome the financial struggles of the late '70s, largely thanks to the success of the Star Wars franchise, Marvel was poised to revolutionize the comic industry with the launch of Secret Wars in 1984. This event not only reshaped the Marvel Universe but also set new standards in the industry, leading Marvel's iconic heroes and villains into new narrative territories for years to come.
This period was also notable for other landmark stories such as Frank Miller's Born Again arc in Daredevil, the resurrection of Jean Grey in X-Factor, and Walt Simonson's Surtur Saga in Thor, among others. In this article, we'll delve into these transformative narratives and other significant stories from this era. Join us as we continue our exploration of Marvel's essential issues in Part 8 of our series.

For fans seeking acclaimed narratives from this time, Frank Miller's return to writing Daredevil in the Born Again storyline is a must-read. Featured in Daredevil #227-233, this arc is often considered the definitive Daredevil tale. It follows Karen Page's tragic descent into addiction, leading her to sell Daredevil's secret identity for heroin, which ultimately reaches the Kingpin. Using this information, the Kingpin systematically destroys Matt Murdock's life, stripping him of his home, career, and social connections, driving him to rock bottom. Matt's redemption, guided by his mother, a nun named Maggie, and his slow resurgence as Daredevil, alongside the Kingpin's spiraling fanaticism, crafts a compelling narrative. This storyline inspired Season 3 of Netflix’s Daredevil and serves as the foundation for the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.

Simultaneously, Walt Simonson's tenure on Thor beginning with issue #337 in 1983 introduced the character Beta Ray Bill, an alien worthy of wielding Mjolnir. Simonson's work revitalized Thor's series with a mythic fantasy tone, culminating in the epic Surtur Saga from #340-353. This saga sees the fire demon Surtur, ruler of Muspelheim, plotting Ragnarok with the Twilight Sword, sending Malekith the Accursed to battle Thor and stall for time. The climax features Thor, Loki, and Odin united against Surtur, a narrative that influenced both Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok.
Secret Wars Changes Comics Forever
As we discussed in Part 4 of our series, the Avengers/Defenders War of 1973 foreshadowed the rise of event crossovers in comics. This trend fully materialized in 1984 with Secret Wars, a 12-issue miniseries orchestrated by then Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, with art by Mike Zeck and Bob Layton. Conceived as a marketing strategy with Mattel, the series revolved around the cosmic entity the Beyonder transporting Marvel's heroes and villains to Battleworld to battle for supremacy. While the story is often critiqued for its lack of depth and character consistency, its impact on the industry cannot be overstated. It led to a sequel, Secret Wars II, and alongside DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths, solidified the event-driven model in comic publishing.

Spider-Man’s Symbiote Suit and Other Iconic Spidey Stories
Following the legendary runs by Stan Lee and Gerry Conway, Roger Stern brought new life to Amazing Spider-Man starting with issue #224. His introduction of the Hobgoblin in #238 marked a significant addition to Spider-Man's rogues gallery, though Stern's departure left the villain's identity unresolved until his return in the 1997 miniseries Spider-Man: Hobgoblin Lives. Additionally, Amazing Spider-Man #252 introduced the black symbiote costume, later detailed in Secret Wars #8 as originating on Battleworld. This suit set the stage for the emergence of one of Spider-Man's most iconic villains. The symbiote saga has been adapted in numerous formats, including Spider-Man 3, various animated series, and Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2. Another pivotal story, The Death of Jean DeWolff in Spectacular Spider-Man #107-110, introduced a darker tone as Spider-Man sought justice for his murdered ally, clashing with Daredevil in the process.

Jean Grey Returns, the Rise of Apocalypse, and Other Mutant Landmarks
The mutant universe also saw significant developments during this time. Vision and the Scarlet Witch #4 confirmed Magneto as the father of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, a revelation that remained canon until 2015. X-Men #171 saw Rogue join the X-Men, transitioning from villain to hero, a move reflected in most adaptations. Magneto's trial in X-Men #200 led to his stewardship of Xavier's School, marking his heroic turn. These events were later adapted in the second episode of X-Men ‘97. The period also witnessed Jean Grey's resurrection across Avengers #263 and Fantastic Four #286, leading to the formation of X-Factor with the original X-Men. X-Factor #5-6 introduced Apocalypse, a formidable villain whose influence extended beyond the team's run, featuring prominently in various media, including X-Men: Apocalypse.
