The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has been thrown into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key members, Garza, telling IGN, "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The excitement is palpable within the GTA 6 Mapping Discord community, where its 370 members (soon to surpass 400) are diving deep into the new details unveiled in the trailer.

"It’s an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," Garza, who manages the Discord server, emphasized to IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we’re really just getting started."

The most recent iteration of the GTA 6 map, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, is now considered outdated. The wealth of new information from Trailer 2 is set to enhance the map's accuracy and detail significantly.

Rockstar not only confirmed plot details and characters but also released 70 new screenshots of GTA 6, revealing various explorable locations within the state of Leonida, the game's fictional take on Florida. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City, mirroring Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a prominent national landmark near Leonida's northern border.

The dedicated volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of all depicted elements, striving to align images of the game's fictional spaces with their real-world inspirations. This effort will culminate in an updated map by DuPz0r, which fans eagerly anticipate as their most comprehensive preview of GTA 6 ahead of its May 2026 release.

Should Rockstar release additional GTA 6 assets, such as gameplay footage, the mapping team is prepared to refine their work further. Only upon the game's launch will they be able to assess the accuracy of their fan-created map against the actual in-game world.

However, the shadow of potential legal action by Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, looms over the project. In March, a modder who had created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to halt their project after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was inspired by the GTA 6 mapping project.

When asked last year about the risk of intervention by Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He explained, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
