Rockstar Announces Grand Theft Auto VI Delay to May 26, 2026

The highly anticipated sequel was originally slated for fall 2025 before this significant postponement.

Rockstar has issued a formal apology regarding the delay of what's expected to become the largest entertainment launch in history.

"We sincerely regret this extended timeline," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto title has been incredibly humbling for our team. We appreciate your continued support and understanding as we finalize development.

"Every project we release aims to surpass player expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI represents our most ambitious effort yet. This additional development time ensures we meet the quality standards our fans deserve."

The announcement confirms GTA VI's release date but notably omits platform details. Industry analysts speculate this leaves room for a potential simultaneous PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the delay, stating: "We fully support Rockstar's decision to extend development and bring their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI to fruition. This promises to be a revolutionary entertainment experience that will redefine expectations."

Zelnick had previously commented on potential delays during a February interview: "We remain highly confident about the project timeline, but development flexibility is crucial for achieving our quality goals."

The revised release schedule creates opportunities for other major titles in late 2025, including Borderlands 4, the next Battlefield installment, Marathon, and Ghost of Yotei. Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 platform may particularly benefit from the adjusted timing.

The delay presents strategic challenges for developers who previously scheduled competing titles for the original fall 2025 window or the new May 2026 timeframe.
