With the much-anticipated release of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a significant update to its official website, the spotlight has shifted to the launch platforms and the new release date set for May 26, 2026. At the conclusion of the trailer, viewers are treated to the release date alongside logos for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, confirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6's initial rollout. Notably, Trailer 2 was captured on a PS5, with specific mention of the PS5 rather than the PS5 Pro.

This omission aligns with Rockstar's traditional approach to game releases, yet in the current gaming landscape of 2025 and beyond, it feels somewhat outdated. Given the increasing importance of the PC market for a game's success, is GTA 6's exclusion of a PC launch at this stage a missed opportunity, or even a misstep?

IGN posed this question to Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, during an interview in February. Zelnick hinted at GTA 6's eventual release on PC, stating, "So with Civ 7 it's available on console and PC and Switch right away. With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms."

GTA 6 is still set to launch exclusively on consoles. Rockstar fans have noted the studio's historical reluctance to release other past games on PC simultaneously with consoles, as well as its strained relationship with the modding community over the years. Nevertheless, many had hoped that a game as monumental as GTA 6 could mark a shift in Rockstar's approach to PC gaming.

Major Rockstar titles do eventually make their way to PC, but the question of how long PC gamers will have to wait for what could be one of the most significant games ever remains unanswered. Will it be Fall 2027, Early 2027, or perhaps a year later in May 2027?

In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer attempted to shed light on why GTA 6 is slated to come to PC after its PS5 and Xbox Series X and S debut, urging PC gamers to give the studio the "benefit of the doubt" regarding its controversial launch strategy.

The potential missed opportunity of skipping a PC launch for GTA 6 cannot be overlooked. Zelnick told IGN that the PC version of a multiplatform game can account for 40% of overall sales, or even more for certain titles.

Meanwhile, the absence of a Nintendo Switch 2 logo in GTA 6 Trailer 2 was perhaps expected. While the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain unknown, it is set to receive CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. This sparked some hope that GTA 6, which is also coming to the less powerful Xbox Series S, might find its way to Nintendo's next-gen console.
