How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
When you start a new character in Stardew Valley, you have the option to adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm as a pet. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that, allowing for multiple pets. To unlock this feature, you must first maximize your friendship level with your current pet.
To do this, ensure you provide your pet with a full bowl of water daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when the bowl fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day; a heart bubble will appear over their head to confirm you've done so. You can monitor your pet's friendship meter in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.
Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notice from Marnie via mail, informing you of the opportunity to adopt more pets from her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted your first pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.
How To Adopt Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
Upon receiving Marnie's notice, visit her shop during its open hours from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). At the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option to view a list of 12 available Pet Licenses, which include five variations of dogs and cats, as well as two types of turtles. Each license comes with a cost, so ensure you have enough gold before making your selection.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley
After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each. These bowls are essential as they provide water and serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing their friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting this can lead to your pets running away, resulting in a loss of companionship and money.
Pet Bowls are available under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (which you can obtain with a Copper Axe or better). It's advisable to build these bowls before adopting your new pets to maintain their friendship levels.
For additional pet supplies, visit Marnie's Ranch where you can buy Doghouses (for outdoor use) and Cat Trees (for indoor use). These items are purely decorative and do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
This guide covers everything you need to know about getting multiple pets in Stardew Valley. For more tips and news on the game, including details on all Stardew Valley farm types and how to choose the best one, be sure to visit The Escapist.
