Guillermo del Toro's lifelong fascination with Frankenstein rivals even the infamous Dr. Frankenstein himself. A recent Netflix preview showcased a first glimpse of his highly anticipated adaptation, though a full trailer won't debut until summer. The image revealed Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein.
Del Toro, in a video message, confessed his decades-long dedication to the project: "This film has been on my mind since I was a child—for 50 years," he stated, according to Variety. "I've been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." He humorously gestured to his extensive Frankenstein collection at his Bleak House.
Briefly shown footage (currently unavailable online) featured Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, portraying a wealthy aristocrat, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster—described as having "long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a glint of red in his eyes."
Del Toro further explained the deeply personal connection to the project: "You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography," he said. "It doesn’t get more personal than this.” His long-held ambition to bring this cinematic vision to life is undeniable. The journey to realizing Netflix's Frankenstein has been a lengthy one, a testament to del Toro's unwavering commitment.
