Fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam, have reason to celebrate as a live-action film adaptation has officially entered full production. Bandai Namco and Legendary have signed an agreement to co-finance this highly anticipated project, marking a significant step forward since the film's initial announcement in 2018. The collaboration between Legendary and the newly established Bandai Namco Filmworks America signals that the wait for the first-ever live-action Gundam movie is nearing its end.

The film, currently without an official title, is set to be written and directed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth. It is slated for a global theatrical release, promising to bring the beloved universe of Mobile Suit Gundam to audiences worldwide.

Mobile Suit Gundam, a franchise that has spawned 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a lucrative toy line, generates over $900 million annually. This live-action venture represents the first foray into this format for the franchise, adding to its already vast and diverse catalog.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have stated, "We plan to steadily announce details as they become finalized." While no specific release windows or plot details have been disclosed, a teaser poster has been released to build anticipation among fans.

The statement also highlighted the franchise's origins, noting, "Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime' that could not be described in terms of simple good and evil, which had been the trend of robot anime up to that point, with realistic depictions of war, detailed scientific examinations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as 'weapons' called 'mobile suits,' and caused a huge boom."
