NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, has achieved a remarkable 230,000 peak concurrent players on Steam following its PC launch. This success secured it a position among the top seven best-selling and top five most-played games on the platform. However, this initial surge may indicate a potential player decline.

Scheduled for a mobile release in September, Once Human is already generating excitement with upcoming updates. These include a player-versus-player (PvP) mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a new player-versus-environment (PvE) area in a northern mountain region, introducing fresh challenges and enemies. The game's unique setting, a world ravaged by a catastrophic event leading to supernatural occurrences, contributes to its high anticipation.

Despite its apparent readiness, NetEase has surprisingly delayed the mobile launch, though it remains scheduled for September. Nevertheless, Once Human maintains its strong performance, holding its position among the top sellers and most-played games on Steam.

A Cause for Concern?

The use of "peak" player count (230,000) is noteworthy. This suggests the average player count is likely lower, and the post-launch decline from the peak might signal a concern for NetEase. This is especially true considering the game initially had over 300,000 Steam wishlists.

NetEase, primarily known for mobile games, is making a significant push into the PC market. While Once Human boasts impressive graphics and gameplay, a rapid shift in their core audience might prove challenging.
