No Dogs Will Be Harmed in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
In the world of video games, depictions of violence against animals are not uncommon, from the Nazi dogs in Wolfenstein to the rabid wolves in Resident Evil 4. However, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle marks a significant shift in approach by its developer, MachineGames.
"Indiana Jones is a dog person," stated MachineGames Creative Director Jens Andersson in an interview with IGN. Despite the often gritty nature of Indiana Jones’ adventures, the developers have opted for a route where Indy can engage in combat with human adversaries but encounters dogs in non-violent ways. This decision stands in contrast to MachineGames' previous work on Wolfenstein, where animal combat was part of the gameplay.
"It’s a family-friendly IP in many ways," Andersson explained. "How do we do that well? Well, these are the kind of things that we do. We have dogs as enemies, but you don’t really hurt the dogs. You scare them away."
Set to launch on December 9th for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a planned release in Spring 2025 for PS5, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle unfolds in 1937, bridging the gap between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. The narrative follows Indy as he pursues artifacts stolen from Marshall College, leading him on a global quest from the Vatican to the Egyptian pyramids, and even to the underwater temples of Sukhothai.
Indy’s iconic whip serves multiple purposes in the game, acting both as a tool for traversal and as a weapon to disarm and defeat foes within open-world-inspired environments.
