Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new game for Android enthusiasts: MageTrain, a fast-paced pixel art 'snakelike' roguelike that echoes the gameplay of Nimble Quest. If you're a fan of the classic, you'll find MageTrain's mechanics strikingly familiar, as it draws significant inspiration from its predecessor.

What’s MageTrain Like?

MageTrain ingeniously blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into a unique gaming experience. You take control of a line of heroes that trail behind you, much like a snake, each autonomously attacking as you navigate through an arena. Your primary task is to strategically position your heroes, deciding who leads and who supports, as their abilities vary based on their position in the train.

At launch, MageTrain offers nine distinct heroes, including one who uniquely throws birds. Each hero brings a set of skills that change depending on their role within the group. As you progress, you'll explore eight different dungeons, battle against 28 types of enemies, and unlock 30 skills to enhance your team. Along the way, you'll also gather gold and power-ups to boost your chances of survival.

The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that no two runs are the same. You'll navigate through branching paths, make critical upgrade choices, and strive to last as long as possible. This structure is reminiscent of games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where levels are not fixed, and there's no option to save your progress. A single mistake, whether it's crashing into an obstacle or being overrun by enemies, means starting over from scratch.

The excitement of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even when you don't succeed. You'll quickly learn when to play defensively, when to launch an all-out attack, and when to simply hold on for another 30 seconds.
