MultiVersus to Shut Down After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the upcoming closure of MultiVersus. The popular platform fighter will end its run on May 30, 2025, following the completion of its fifth and final season.
MultiVersus Season 5: The Final Chapter
On January 31, 2025, MultiVersus' official X account broke the news, confirming that Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will be the game's last. A blog post on the official website elaborated, stating that Season 5 will be the final content update. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman from DC and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Both will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's conclusion on May 30, 2025, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.
Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy
While online servers will close, players can still enjoy MultiVersus offline. A local gameplay mode, supporting solo play against AI or co-op with up to three friends, will remain accessible. To retain this offline functionality, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus between February 4th, 9 AM PST, and May 30th, 9 AM PDT. Upon logging in, the game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's account, preserving all earned and purchased content. Real-money transactions for Gleamium, the in-game premium currency, ceased on January 31, 2025. However, any remaining Gleamium can be used until the end of Season 5.
A Brief Look Back: From Beta to Closure
MultiVersus launched its public beta in July 2022, quickly gaining popularity as a free-to-play fighting game. After a successful initial period featuring two seasons, the game was relaunched in May 2024 with significant updates, including new characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, and revised currencies. Despite these improvements, the game faced challenges, including technical issues, frequent disconnections, and player concerns regarding microtransactions. Reports indicated a significant drop in player count in July 2024. Ultimately, MultiVersus will conclude its run on May 30th, 2025, at 9 AM PDT, leaving behind a legacy of 35 playable characters from diverse franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support.
MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
