Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage condemns the use of artificial intelligence in acting, deeming it a "dead end" for performers who allow AI to influence their work. In his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor (Dream Scenario), Cage voiced his concerns, emphasizing that robots cannot authentically portray the human condition.

Variety reports Cage's impassioned plea against AI's encroachment on the art of acting. He stated that allowing AI to manipulate even a fraction of a performance would ultimately compromise the integrity and truth of artistic expression, replacing it with purely financial motives. He stressed the vital role of art, and acting specifically, in reflecting the human experience through genuine emotional and thoughtful recreation—a task he believes AI is incapable of performing. He warned against AI's potential to drain performances of heart and authenticity, leading to a homogenized, robotic representation of life.

Cage's stance echoes those of other actors who have expressed similar reservations about AI's impact on their profession, particularly in voice acting where AI-generated recreations of performances have become increasingly common, even in major video game titles. Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) are among those who have publicly criticized AI's use, citing concerns about the potential loss of income and the inherent dangers of the technology.

The filmmaking community is also divided on the issue. While Tim Burton expressed alarm at AI-generated art, describing it as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder advocates for embracing AI's potential rather than resisting its integration into filmmaking.
