Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 collaboration, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, encountered several setbacks.

Where Did It Go Wrong?

The initial designs for the Evangelion characters, created collaboratively by Shift Up and the NIKKE team, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators. Subsequent revisions, while satisfying the licensors, failed to resonate with players. The resulting costumes, while faithful to the source material, lacked the appeal to entice players to acquire them.

Player Feedback:

The problem wasn't solely the character designs. Players found little incentive to spend on limited-time characters or costumes, particularly given the lack of significant visual differences between the new skins and the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, suffered particularly from this issue.

The crossover also diluted NIKKE's established identity, which players appreciate for its bold anime aesthetic and engaging storyline. The event felt drawn-out and uninspired, leaving many feeling underwhelmed.

Shift Up acknowledges the criticism and promises to incorporate player feedback into future collaborations. Hopefully, this will lead to more engaging and exciting crossover events.
