Nintendo Bans Pirate Switch 2 Users Online
Numerous Nintendo Switch 2 owners have reported unexpected bans from the console's online services, with many suspecting their use of MIG Switch cartridges triggered the restrictions.
The MIG Switch is a flash cartridge designed to run copied Nintendo Switch 1 games—a practice Nintendo strictly opposes, though some users claim they're only playing backups of legally purchased titles.
Regardless of intent, inserting a MIG Switch into Switch 2 appears to consistently result in online bans. Affected users report losing access to online multiplayer, the eShop, and other Nintendo services, prompting urgent warnings across gaming communities.
"My Switch 2 got banned after using MIG Switch with legitimate game backups, suggesting Nintendo can detect something," shared one user on social media, referencing growing online reports.
"Reddit discussions are confirming similar cases. I strongly advise against using MIG Switch—it was always risky, but doubly so on Switch 2."
My Switch 2 test has been banned, after using the mig switch with perfectly legal dumps of my own cartridges, so it would seem that Nintendo can detect something

A Reddit user described attempting just one MIG Switch session with a legitimate backup before receiving Nintendo's ban: "It displayed the game title but wouldn't load, attempted an update, and days later—ban. Though I've used official cartridges exclusively since."
Banned consoles now display error code 2124-4508: "The use of online services on this console is currently restricted by Nintendo" when attempting online features.
YouTube channel Scattered Brain demonstrated that bans persist even after switching Nintendo accounts, confirming restrictions are hardware-based. Their footage shows banned consoles remain functional offline—for now avoiding complete deactivation.

Nintendo's updated Account Agreement prior to Switch 2's launch explicitly warned against using unauthorized hardware/software, threatening permanent service or device restrictions—making these bans unsurprising despite user shock.
"My Switch 2 got console-banned mysteriously!" lamented one Redditor, who later admitted testing MIG Switch despite unsuccessful results.
IGN has reached out to Nintendo for clarification.
