Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Now Requires Phone Number Verification
Nintendo Switch 2 introduces GameChat, a built-in video calling feature that enhances the social aspect of gaming on the new console. However, setting up GameChat requires users to verify their identity by providing a phone number, which will be linked to their Nintendo Account and used to receive a verification text message. This step ensures that users adhere to appropriate behavior within the GameChat environment.
For users under 16, GameChat is initially blocked and requires parental consent through the Parental Controls app. Parents or guardians must also provide their phone number for verification, adding an extra layer of security and control.
According to information found on Nintendo's website, it seems that every user with a Nintendo Account will need to complete this verification process when using a Switch 2, even if the console is shared among multiple users. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for further clarification on this policy.
To access GameChat, players can press the new 'C' button on the Switch 2 controllers, allowing up to four people to engage in a video chat or up to 24 to participate in a group audio call. Users can also broadcast themselves using a separately sold camera peripheral and stream their gameplay, marking Nintendo's first foray into this type of service, which historically has been slower to adopt compared to other console manufacturers.

Recent insights from Digital Foundry have shed light on the technical implications of GameChat on the Nintendo Switch 2. They revealed that GameChat significantly affects system resources, raising concerns among developers. Nintendo offers a testing tool to simulate the impact of GameChat, allowing developers to assess performance without running actual sessions. This tool mimics API latency and L3 cache misses, providing a realistic simulation of GameChat's system demands.
Digital Foundry expressed curiosity about whether GameChat impacts game performance for end users, suggesting that if GameChat resources are allocated within the system, it might not make a difference. However, the existence of emulation tools implies a potential performance hit that developers need to account for. As Digital Foundry noted, "We'll be interested to see how GameChat may (or may not) impact game performance as this does seem to be an area of developer concern." The full impact will become clearer when the Switch 2 launches on June 5.
As a reminder, GameChat will be free for the first 10 months following the Switch 2's release. After March 31, 2026, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required to continue using the feature.
In other news, we've recently seen the first look at a Switch 2 game cartridge and heard that Samsung is interested in supplying OLED screens for a potential Switch 2 upgrade.
