Oblivion Remastered Faces Persistent Camera and Save Crash Issues, Experts Urge Swift Fixes
Tech analysts report that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is grappling with notable performance challenges across all console platforms, prompting calls for an immediate patch.
Oblivion Remastered has seen a triumphant release, attracting over 4 million players and earning a ‘very positive’ rating on Steam. Yet, persistent performance issues continue to trouble players.
Digital Foundry conducted an in-depth review of Oblivion Remastered across consoles, identifying widespread issues. Analyst Thomas Morgan from Digital Foundry commented on Virtuos’ Unreal Engine 5 update:
Every platform faces challenges: PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series consoles all experience stuttering during open-world exploration. Additionally, frame rates frequently dip below 60fps, with performance worsening over extended playtime, likely due to a memory leak. Worst of all, frequent crashes to the system menu occur when loading saves too often, affecting both PlayStation and Xbox platforms.
What does this mean in-game? Digital Foundry notes that prolonged play sessions degrade performance compared to a fresh start. Cycling through saves introduces glitches, Morgan explained. Notably, extended play causes the camera to sit too high during horseback riding, though a game restart resolves this.
The potential memory leak causing performance decline over time is particularly alarming. Repeated save-loading crashes are another critical concern.
Players and experts alike hope Bethesda will tackle these issues promptly, as extended time in the vast fantasy RPG increases the likelihood of encountering these problems.
“This is a critical situation for a remaster, and Virtuos must prioritize stabilizing the game to prevent crashes,” Morgan emphasized.
Digital Foundry’s critique questions whether Oblivion Remastered was rushed to release. A hotfix for Xbox Series X remains unavailable for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, highlighting version disparities.
The PC version fares no better, with Digital Foundry labeling its performance as “poor.” For a detailed breakdown, their full analysis is highly recommended.

Despite these setbacks, Oblivion Remastered remains a commercial success, ranking as the third best-selling game in the U.S. for 2025 after its April 22 surprise launch, behind only Monster Hunter: Wilds and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.
Developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered boasts numerous enhancements, from 4K resolution and 60fps to revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and menus. New dialogue, improved third-person perspectives, and advanced lip-sync technology have also been well-received, with some fans arguing it feels more like a remake than a remaster. Bethesda, however, has clarified its choice to label it a remaster.
Since its release, players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered advise tackling Kvatch early to avoid challenges from level scaling. Reports also highlight a player who ventured beyond Cyrodiil to explore Valenwood, Skyrim, and Hammerfell, the rumored setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
