I still remember the day I bought my first OLED TV: the LG E8 55-inch in 2019—right before the world went into lockdown. Looking back, it was the perfect companion for those long months indoors. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what made OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology special. I knew that unlike LCDs, which rely on backlighting, OLED uses self-lit pixels to deliver infinite contrast. But it wasn’t until I played Final Fantasy XV and fought through emotional ruins in The Last of Us Part II that I truly felt the power of OLED. It was like reliving a vivid memory in real-time.

Of course, I didn’t stop at the E8.

A few years later, I upgraded to the LG C2 65-inch TV, and since then, I’ve tested countless devices with OLED displays. Along the way, I learned an important truth: not all OLED screens are created equal. In fact, they often use different underlying technologies. You might be wondering, “How many types of OLED exist?” The list is long—but there are only three you really need to know: WOLED, QD-OLED, and AMOLED.

Understanding WOLED, QD-OLED, and AMOLED: How They Work

OLED has been around for decades, with early experiments from companies like Kodak and Mitsubishi. However, it wasn't until LG launched its OLED TVs in the early 2010s that the technology became widely adopted.

LG’s version is known as WOLED (White OLED). While the company doesn’t emphasize the "W" in its marketing, it's crucial to understanding how their OLED panels work. Traditional RGB OLEDs use red, green, and blue subpixels, but these degrade at different rates over time, increasing the risk of burn-in. WOLED addresses this by using a white OLED layer combined with an RGBW color filter. Instead of each pixel emitting its own red, green, or blue light, all pixels emit white light filtered through colored layers.

This helps prolong lifespan, but introduces its own challenges—like uneven brightness and reduced color volume due to light loss through the filters. Some high-end WOLED models combat this with Micro Lens Array technology, which enhances light efficiency by focusing more output per pixel.

In 2022, another alternative emerged: QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED), pioneered by Samsung. This technology replaces the white OLED layer with a blue one, paired with quantum dot color converters. Unlike traditional color filters, quantum dots absorb and re-emit light without significant losses, resulting in richer colors and higher brightness.

Then there's AMOLED, which stands apart slightly. It builds on WOLED-like principles but adds a thin-film transistor (TFT) layer to control pixel activation more efficiently. This allows faster response times, ideal for mobile devices. However, it comes at the cost of slightly reduced contrast compared to standard OLEDs.

WOLED vs. QD-OLED vs. AMOLED: Which Is Best for Gaming?

Choosing the best OLED type for gaming depends on your setup and preferences. For most, QD-OLED delivers superior brightness and color accuracy thanks to its efficient light conversion method. However, WOLED may be preferable in bright environments where reflections can interfere with image quality.

AMOLED is typically found in smartphones and laptops rather than large TVs. Its flexibility makes it ideal for foldable devices, and it supports high refresh rates and wide viewing angles. That said, AMOLED displays tend to struggle under direct sunlight due to lower peak brightness.

When choosing between WOLED (often simply marketed as OLED) and QD-OLED for gaming monitors or TVs, consider your environment. QD-OLED generally offers better color vibrancy and overall brightness, but without the polarizing filter used in WOLED panels, it can reflect more ambient light. For example, in a room with lots of natural light, my WOLED TV maintains deep blacks even with glare, while my QD-OLED monitor shows a purple-ish tint under similar conditions.

Ultimately, display performance boils down to specs and budget. Higher-end models usually offer better performance regardless of the underlying tech.

The Future of OLED: Introducing PHOLED

Beyond current OLED variants lies PHOLED (Phosphorescent OLED), which uses phosphorescent materials instead of fluorescent ones to convert energy into light. While promising greater efficiency, early versions faced issues with blue pixel longevity—until now.

LG recently announced a breakthrough in blue PHOLED technology, paving the way for mass production. Dubbed “Dream OLED,” PHOLED promises up to four times the luminous efficiency of traditional OLED, enabling brighter images with lower power consumption.

While we won’t see PHOLED TVs anytime soon, this innovation is expected to debut in smartphones and tablets first—marking the next evolution in display technology.
