Sega's classic arcade racer OutRun is getting an unexpected Hollywood adaptation, with Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney attached to the project.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Universal Pictures has tapped Transformers director Bay to helm and produce the OutRun film, with Sweeney joining as a producer. Screenwriter Jayson Rothwell is on board, though plot specifics remain under wraps and no release date has been announced.

From Sega's side, Sonic movie producer Toru Nakahara is involved, with Sega's American and European CEO Shuji Utsumi overseeing the production.

Originally launched in 1986, OutRun revolutionized arcade racing with its groundbreaking visuals crafted by Sega pioneer Yu Suzuki. While the franchise saw multiple ports and a 2003 sequel, it's been mostly inactive since Sumo Digital's 2009 OutRun Online Arcade release.

Sega has been revisiting its classic IPs recently, with new installments of Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi currently in development.

The company has found significant success with game adaptations, particularly the blockbuster Sonic films and last year's Amazon series Like a Dragon: Yakuza. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Minecraft Movie breaking box office records, Hollywood is increasingly embracing video game properties.

While details remain scarce, Bay and Sweeney's involvement suggests OutRun could deliver high-speed thrills in the vein of the Fast & Furious franchise.
