Nintendo has enlisted actor Paul Rudd to generate excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2 with a new commercial that playfully echoes a memorable 90s ad he starred in for the Super Nintendo. The original 1991 commercial featured Rudd, donning a long black jacket, beaded necklace, and a unique hairdo, confidently walking into a drive-in theater, SNES in tow. He connected the console and played iconic games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, and Sim City on the large screen, drawing a fascinated crowd. The ad famously ended with the slogan: "Now you're playing with power."

In the new commercial for the Nintendo Switch 2, Rudd, now 34 years older yet remarkably unchanged, sports the same iconic attire. This time, he strides into a living room and sets up the Nintendo Switch 2 to play Mario Kart World with comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, alongside a child who affectionately calls him "Uncle Paul." Utilizing the new GameChat feature, the group engages in playful banter, teasing Rudd about his nostalgic 90s outfit and dramatic entrance, complete with a fog machine and fan to mimic the original commercial's intensity. The ad cleverly wraps up with Rudd stating, "Now we're playing together," embracing the communal aspect of gaming. While undeniably cheesy, the commercial's self-aware humor and nod to the original ad make for an endearing tribute.

IGN had the privilege of interviewing Rudd about his experience filming this sequel to his iconic Nintendo hardware commercial, more than three decades later. During our discussion, Rudd revealed he likely wore his own beaded necklace in the original ad and continued playing Mario Kart World on set between takes.
