Persona 5: The Phantom X Global Launch on the Horizon?

Sega's recent financial report hints at a potential global release for Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X). The report indicates that the game's initial sales are meeting expectations and that global expansion is being considered alongside further Japanese distribution.

Currently in Open Beta – Limited Regions Only

Licensed by Atlus, P5X initially launched in a soft-launch open beta in China (April 12, 2024), followed by Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and Taiwan (April 18, 2024). Perfect World Games (South Korea) publishes the mobile and PC title, developed by their subsidiary, Black Wings Game Studio (China).

Players control a new silent protagonist, "Wonder," a high school student by day and Phantom Thief by night, joining forces with Joker (from the main Persona 5 series) and a new character, YUI, to combat societal injustices. Wonder's initial Persona is Janosik, inspired by Slovakian folklore and embodying a Robin Hood-esque persona.

The game retains the series' signature turn-based combat, social simulation, and dungeon crawling elements, incorporating a gacha system for character acquisition.

New Roguelike Mode: Heart Rail

A recent gameplay showcase by prominent Persona content creator Faz revealed a new roguelike game mode, "Heart Rail," currently available in the China release. This mode bears resemblance to Honkai: Star Rail's Simulated Universe, featuring power-up selection, varied map exploration, and stage completion rewards.

Sega's Positive Financial Outlook

Sega reported strong sales for several titles, including Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (1 million units sold globally in its first week), Persona 3 Reload (1 million units globally in its first week – Atlus' fastest-selling title), and Football Manager 2024 (9 million players since November 2023).

Sega's Restructure and Future Plans

Sega announced a restructuring, creating a new "Gaming Business" segment focused on online gaming, aiming to establish a strong presence in the North American online gaming market. This segment will also encompass Sega Sammy Creation's slot machine business and Paradise Sega Sammy's integrated resort operations.

The company forecasts increased sales and profits for FY2025, projecting 93 billion Yen (approximately $597 billion USD) in revenue for the Full Game segment – a 5.4% increase. A new Sonic title is also anticipated for next year.
