PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview
If you polled golf game enthusiasts about which pro sports series they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would likely top the list. Even MLB and NHL might rank higher than a golf title. Yet, 2K is back for a third swing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's impressive.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for a decade, starting with The Golf Club before partnering with 2K. This experience shows in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an expansive course selection (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues like occasional framerate hiccups on PC (when surveying holes) are easily overlooked.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick option—pull down to wind up, press forward to strike—is intuitive. Difficulty settings range from forgiving (Perfect Swing) to challenging, allowing for precise shot shaping with the right stick. The LB button adds further control for shaping shots. Improved ball physics and lateral movement in the tee box enhance gameplay. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, certainly helped!MyCareer mode features engaging narrative mechanics. I even got a movie role offer alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin, due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear affecting stats and skills. Added Quests, refreshed regularly, provide ongoing goals.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, allows for reasonable character customization, enhanced by the addition of skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise fun casual gameplay, reminiscent of *Links 2004*. Asynchronous modes cater to players in different time zones.PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to gush over, but it’s a solid bet for golf fans and those seeking a relaxing game. A playable demo is available now.
