Rare's Everwild, announced during Microsoft's X019 presentation, has been shrouded in mystery and speculation over the past five years due to its absence from Xbox showcases and rumors of reboots. However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed that Everwild is still very much in development. In an interview with XboxEra, Spencer expressed his excitement for the game, mentioning a recent visit to Rare's UK studio where he saw the progress being made on Everwild.

Spencer highlighted Rare's ongoing commitment to Everwild, alongside other anticipated titles like State of Decay and the next game from Double Fine. He emphasized Microsoft's strategy of allowing developers sufficient time to perfect their projects, even amidst a robust release schedule bolstered by the acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Spencer's enthusiasm was further underscored by his upcoming visit to The Coalition in Vancouver, the developers of Gears of War.

Despite concerns fueled by rumors of a reboot and the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020, Rare has appointed veteran designer Gregg Mayles to lead Everwild. Mayles, known for his work on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata, and Sea of Thieves, brings a wealth of experience to the project.

Everwild is described as a third-person adventure game with elements of a god game, though its long development cycle suggests possible changes to this concept. The last trailer, released in July 2020, promised "a unique and unforgettable experience in a natural and magical world."

Microsoft's portfolio of in-development games is extensive, including the Perfect Dark reboot, the next Halo installment, and Playground's new Fable game. Bethesda is also working on The Elder Scrolls 6, while Activision continues to develop this year's Call of Duty. In the near future, fans can look forward to id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages, set to launch in May.
