Chilean President Honors Pokémon TCG World Champion
Fernando Cifuentes, the 18-year-old Pokémon TCG World Champion, received an extraordinary honor: a meeting with the President of Chile. This remarkable event took place at Palacio de La Moneda, the presidential palace, where Cifuentes and nine fellow Chilean competitors enjoyed a meal and photo opportunity with President Boric. The Chilean government publicly celebrated their achievement, highlighting the players' success in reaching the second day of the World Championships. Government officials joined the President in congratulating the talented group.
President Boric's Instagram post lauded the positive influence of trading card games on youth, emphasizing the community spirit and camaraderie fostered through competitive play. Cifuentes received a personalized framed card featuring himself and Iron Thorns, his championship Pokémon. The card's inscription reads: "Fernando and Iron Thorns. Ability: World Champion. Fernando Cifuentes, from Iquique, made history as the first Chilean to win the Pokémon World Championships 2024 Masters Finals in Honolulu, Hawaii."
President Boric's Pokémon fandom adds a unique element to the story. A known Pokémon enthusiast (his favorite is Squirtle), he received a Squirtle plushie from the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2021.
Cifuentes' Unlikely Victory
Cifuentes' journey to victory was far from predictable. A near-elimination in the Top 8 against Ian Robb (who was later disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct) led to an unexpected semifinal match against Jesse Parker. Cifuentes ultimately triumphed, defeating Parker and runner-up Seinosuke Shiokawa to claim the $50,000 prize.
