The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is a fantastic drive for your gaming PC and PS5. It easily surpasses Sony's minimum speed requirements for the PS5, boasting sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and 6,300MB/s respectively. While not quite as fast as the 990 Pro, it's significantly faster than the standard 990 Evo. The key difference? This is a DRAM-less drive. For PS5 gaming, this makes no difference at all. For PCs, it utilizes HMB (host memory buffer), borrowing a negligible amount of system RAM—gamers won't notice a performance gap.
The 990 Evo Plus lacks a pre-installed heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is power-efficient and generates less heat. This often means a heatsink isn't necessary, even in a PS5, and you shouldn't experience thermal throttling. Adding a heatsink is certainly an option for extra peace of mind, but it's not essential and adds only minimal cost.
