Sebastian Stan opened up about his early career challenges before landing the career-defining role of Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Stan shared how a $65,000 residuals check from Hot Tub Time Machine became his financial lifeline just before taking on the role of Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger. The actor had played antagonist Blaine in the 2010 sci-fi comedy before joining Chris Evans in Marvel's 2011 World War II-set superhero film.

"I was genuinely struggling professionally at that moment," Stan recalled. "Right after hanging up with my financial advisor, who informed me those Hot Tub Time Machine residuals had literally saved me with that $65,000 payment."

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Vanity Fair they saw Stan's untapped potential for Winter Soldier despite his relatively unknown status.

"His depth and intensity were immediately apparent," Feige remembered. "I told Captain America producer Stephen Broussard, 'He'll make a solid Bucky, but he'll truly shine as Winter Soldier.'"

Stan continued portraying the character through multiple MCU installments including Captain America sequels, Avengers films, this year's Brave New World, and the upcoming Thunderbolts. With Bucky appearing in Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement, fans can anticipate seeing more of Stan's Winter Soldier.
